Personal History Tarian Aloria was born in 2063 on the Trill homeworld to Ranul Daris, a Trill historian, and Eylen Aloria, an El-Aurian diplomat and musician that had found roots on the Trill homeworld shortly after Trill achieved warp flight. Eylen had been called in by the Vulcans to help mediate some of the talks between them and the Trill because of the tense first contact situation that had arisen between the two species. Having an outsider perspective was something that the Vulcans desperately needed and called upon Eylen for her unique diplomatic skill.

Eylen eventually decided to put down some roots on the Trill homeworld shortly after the talks and first contact was officially concluded, where she met Ranul at a symposium on Trill historical thought about exploration. The two of them quickly fell in love with one another, where they would go on to get married in a traditional Trill ceremony. While the ceremony was quite traditional for the Trill, Ranul allowed for some of Eylen’s own El-Aurian ceremonies to be performed.

Within a year of their marriage, Ranul and Eylen were expecting their first child together. Tarian was born in the early part of 2063, making him the oldest of three boys that would come along for Tarian’s parents. Early on in Tarian’s life, Tarian became interested in the various sciences because of the various stories that Ranul and Eylen would tell him. While Ranul was a historian, he would tell Tarian about the various stories from Trill’s past about how the ancient Trill would see the world around them, as well as the stars above them. Eylen would tell the young Tarian about the adventures and travels that her and the various El-Aurians have done over the centuries since they found travel between the stars.

So, by the time that Tarian started primary school in the late 2060’s, he had been to various planetariums to view the stars above his own head with dreams of eventually joining them. However, due to his mixed heritage, Tarian quickly realized that school wasn’t going to be the easiest thing for him, as he was bullied relentlessly since he started primary school. People would make fun of Tarian for having spots that were diminished due to his heritage and would tease him for not being a true Trill. This caused Tarian to become more introverted and caused him to enjoy the solitude of being alone, or with just a few friends that he would make over time throughout school.

Throughout primary school on Trill, Tarian found that his studies kept his thoughts away from the constant bullying that he received on a daily basis. Due to his love for the sciences, Tarian found out that he loved astrophysics and temporal mechanics the most, even if temporal mechanics was still a budding science on the Trill homeworld at the time. This allowed Tarian the chance to cross cultures and the bullying that he had been receiving during this time and make some of his first friends growing up.

Tarian’s first friends were a pair of twin boys named Torrin and Therain, as well as a young girl by the name of Erynn. The four of them bonded over their mutual love of various science and mathematics, playing off each other's strengths and allowing for them to grow their friendship as they grew up over their school years. As the four of them grew up, science and math became a bit of a competition for them, as all of them went off to regional and planetary science and math events as they made their way into secondary school.

With a competitive spirit and close knit bond, Tarian and his friends formed a dynamic team during their time in secondary school. Together, they persuaded a shared goal of helping to advance Trill’s understanding of the universe across science and math. Following first contact with the Vulcans, the Trill began to adopt more complex concepts in science and math, helping to spark Tarian’s lifelong passion into temporal mechanics and astrophysics.

Starting in their last four years of high school, the group spent three years collaborating on projects aimed at unraveling the mysteries of time and the stars. Each member of Tarian’s friend group helped bring their own unique flair to their shared endeavors and helped Tarian’s own understanding of the universe around him on the Trill homeworld. Eventually, the group heard of a high stakes competition that would be held early on in their fourth and final year of high school, where they could culminate their work and show both the Vulcan and Trill people what they’ve found out about temporal mechanics and astrophysics.

With a competitive spirit and close knit bond, Tarian and his friends formed a dynamic team during their secondary school years. Together, they pursued a shared goal of helping to advance Trill’s understanding of the universe. Following first contact with the Vulcans, the Trill began to adopt more complex concepts into their science and math, helping to spark Tarian’s fascination with the stars and time. Despite the Vulcans' assertion that time travel was impossible, Tarian’s intuition told him otherwise, igniting a lifelong passion to explore the interplay between astrophysics and temporal mechanics.

The competition featured a panel of Trill and Vulcan judges, reflecting the deepening trust between the two species. When it was their turn to present, the group’s excitement and work was met with harsh skepticism. The Vulcan judges dismissed their work outright, adhering to their shared belief that time travel was impossible. The team left the competition disappointed, but not defeated. Instead, the setback fueled their determination to prove their theories and grow upon them.

Inspired by their failure to gain the proper recognition they deserved, Tarian and his friends resolved to pursue higher education. Their hope was to refine their knowledge and prove the viability of their ideas. Eventually, all four were accepted into the prestigious Trill Academy of Science and Mathematics in Leran Mavev, where they could continue their friendship, competitiveness, and learn more about the fields that they had come to love, especially for Tarian.

After he graduated from secondary school in 2081, Tarian embarked on an ambitious journey with his friends at the Trill Academy of Science and Mathematics in Leran Manev. The Academy was known at the time for producing some of Trill’s most celebrated scientists and thinkers, and Tarian saw it as the perfect place to pursue his passion for astrophysics and temporal mechanics. Along with those childhood friends, Tarian delved into the various coursework and research that made the Academy so well known, including spending long nights at the Academy’s state of the art observatories and labs.

While at the Academy, Tarian distinguished himself even amongst his friends and classmates for thinking outside of the box. One of the early advancements that Tarian was able to make at the Academy on Trill was his work on the theoretical connections between quantum singularities and temporal distortions, earning him both praise and skepticism from his peers and professors. Despite the ongoing skepticism from Vulcan scientists who influenced this early Trill framework, Terian remained steadfast in his beliefs that time travel wasn’t just theoretical, but achievable. His work and tireless hours of research culminated in his graduate thesis, “Temporal Pathways: The Hidden Mechanisms of Time’s Fabric,” which proposed new and ground-breaking models for manipulating subspace fields to influence the flow of time.

Following his graduation from the Academy with honors in 2087, Tarian was offered a research position at the Trill Science Institute. Tarian would spend the better part of two decades working on several studies into temporal phenomena, including observations of subspace anomalies that hinted at temporal irregularities. During this time, Tarian’s reputation grew, earning him invitations to collaborate with other prominent scientists across the quadrant. His work often brought him into contact with Vulcan counterparts, where the debates over plausibility of time travel became as much a part of his life as actual research.

Despite his professional successes, Tarian eventually came to feel constrained by the academic rigidity of the Trill sciences. In his early 40’s, Tarian took a sabbatical to explore practical applications of his theories. This period saw Tarian embark on a series of independent expeditions, including one aboard a private exploration vessel that sought to map subspace anomalies near the Beta Quadrant. These experiences expanded Tarian’s worldview and reinforced his desire to not only understand time, but to use it for the betterment of sentient life.

By the mid-22nd century, Tarian had grown restless. Trill’s academic and scientific institutions, while advanced, were slow to accept and adapt to radical ideals like temporal manipulation. Tarian began to look outward, inspired by the interstellar alliances and rapid technological advancements of species like the Humans, Andorians, and the Vulcans. The founding of the United Federation of Planets in 2161 only further fueled his interests in contributing to a larger, more collaborative effort.

For several decades after the founding of the Federation, Tarian worked as a consultant on various Federation scientific initiatives, including the development of long-range sensor arrays and research into the effects of warp travel on subspace. Those projects brought Tarian into contact with Starfleet personnel, whose exploratory and diplomatic missions deeply resonated with Tarian’s values and personal history. By 2200, Tarian began to consider Starfleet as a way to combine his expertise with his desire for practical, hands-on exploration.

Finally, in 2207, at the age of 144, Tarian formally joined Starfleet by going through the Academy. His extensive background allowed for Tarian to specialize in temporal mechanics and subspace phenomena, areas that were becoming increasingly important as Starfleet expanded its exploratory and defensive capabilities. Though his path to Starfleet was unconventional and marked by various years in independent study, Tarian saw it as the culmination of his life’s work: a chance to unravel the mysteries of time while contributing to the growth of the Federation.

In 2207, Tarian stepped onto the grounds of Starfleet Academy and Earth for one of the first times in his life. Despite having a wealth of knowledge before coming to Starfleet Academy, Tarian approached his time at the Academy with a bit of humility, knowing this was an entirely new frontier for him. The diverse student body had given Tarian the first chance to feel included and helped to broaden his perspective, culturally and scientifically for the first time in years.

Tarian excelled academically, particularly in courses on advanced astrophysics, subspace dynamics, and temporal mechanics. Tarian often found himself at the center of debates in temporal theory classes, challenging both himself and his classmates' long held assumptions with insight born out of years of independent research. While many of his professors at Starfleet Academy were impressed, others found Tarian’s unconventional methods unorthodox, pushing them to question their own ideas under scrutiny of Starfleet’s scientific standards.

Socially, Tarian was introverted while at the Academy, forming close bonds with a small group of cadets. His El-Aurian ability to listen deeply and his Trill emphasis on shared experiences made him a valued friend and confidant. Tarian became known for hosting late-night study sessions and discussions under the stars on the grounds of the Academy. It was during this time that Tarian first began learning various string instruments from the various cultures that made up the Federation, including the Vulcan lire.

Tarian’s time at the Academy wasn’t without challenges. The structure and hierarchical nature of Starfleet clashes at times with Tarian’s independent spirit. However, Tarian learned to quickly adapt and learned several disciplines to hone his mind in mediation, which would come to serve him later in his life throughout the Federation. By 2211, Tarian had graduated with honors in Temporal Mechanics and Astrophysics, but also gained an appreciation for Starfleet and its mission for exploration.

After graduating from the Academy, Tarian was assigned to the USS Daedalus, where his expertise was put to practical use. Though the ship was an older model, Tarian saw it as an opportunity to prove himself within Starfleet. The Daedalus’ mission profile was surveying uncharted regions, studying spatial anomalies, and maintaining peaceful relations with neighboring species, which allowed for Tarian to develop as a scientist and an officer.

By 2220, Tarian transitioned to the Starfleet Science Corps, taking on a specialized role as a Temporal Specialist. Stationed on both Earth and Vulcan during this time, Tarian collaborated with some of the most esteemed scientists of the time, both Vulcan temporal theorists and Human subspace engineers. Over the next two decades, Tarian refined Starfleet’s understanding of temporal anomalies, contributing to critical breakthroughs in detecting and mitigating their effects. Tarian’s work during this period was instrumental in developing early temporal stabilization protocols, earning him recognition within the scientific community.

Around 2240, Tarian’s expertise propelled him to the position of Senior Temporal Analyst at Starfleet Command on Earth. His role during this time placed him at the center of Starfleet’s temporal initiatives, overseeing research projects and advising starships encountering temporal phenomena. Tarian was picked specifically for this role due to his meticulous research and analysis both in and out of Starfleet, as well as his ethical stance towards temporal phenomena throughout the quadrant. His approach during this period would help to shape some of the earliest temporal directives for Starfleet and early DTI work on the civilian side.

In 2265, Tarian shifted to a more dynamic role as a Field Temporal Officer under Starfleet Command. This position allowed them to apply their expertise directly in the field, investigating temporal anomalies and providing on-site consultation to starships encountering temporal disturbances. For over four decades, Tarian worked at the frontier of temporal exploration, balancing scientific inquiry with Starfleet’s broader mission of exploration and diplomacy. His efforts not only stabilized countless temporal disruptions, but also reinforced Starfleet’s commitment to preserving the timeline’s integrity.

By 2311, Tarian had become one of Starfleet’s foremost authorities on Temporal Mechanics. During this time, Tarian worked aboard the USS Challenger as part of a critical mission near the Romulan Neutral Zone. Tensions were escalating that led to the Tomed Incident, not only marking a turning point for interstellar politics, but for Tarian’s career. When the incident occurred, it resulted in the apparent destruction of several Federation vessels, including the Challenger. Official records record Tarian as one of the casualties.

In reality, the Tomed Incident served as a cover for a highly classified extraction orchestrated by various members of Starfleet and the Department of Temporal Investigations, or DTI. Tarian, along with a select group of officers, were reassigned to perform deep-cover operations as a joint venture between Starfleet and the DTI. For the next 87 years, Tarian and the other undercover operatives worked to monitor the timeline and mitigate temporal disruptions that could have disrupted the Federation’s future.

One such incident was the Temporal Nexus Incident of 2332, which was one of Tarian’s early missions undercover. An anomaly appeared near the Deneb Sector, causing the nearby star system to destabilize and created a recursive loop that threatened the survival of the entire population within that sector. With the help of a Starfleet vessel on loan to the DTI, Tarian devised a plan to collapse the nexus using a temporal inversion pulse. The mission was nearly a failure when a misalignment occurred, trapping Tarian in a temporal echo for several weeks. His ability to remain calm under stress allowed for him to devise a plan to invert the pulse from within the nexus, causing it to dissipate over a several hour period.

During the period of the late 2350’s and early 2360’s, Tarian was assigned to a covert observation post on Earth, monitoring the effects of a temporal incursion involving an unregistered time traveler. During this assignment, he met a young and ambitious member of the DTI called Jerimiah Isaacs, who had recently joined DTI’s temporal research division. Tarian and Isaacs quickly became friends, talking about various scientific texts and reciting Shakespeare to one another.

One particularly defining moment between these two men was during a joint mission to prevent the theft of an artifact that was crucial to Federation technology. Isaacs, eager to prove himself, initially proposed a plan that involved significant risk to the timeline. Tarian calmly pointed out the potential consequences and worked with Isaacs to develop a more measured approach. The operation succeeded, and Isaacs later credited Tarian with teaching him the importance of restraint and foresight in temporal operations. The mentorship left a lasting impression on Isaacs, who would go on to become Director of the DTI, frequently citing Tarian as one of his greatest influences.

Another pivotal mission occurred in 2372, when a Tzenkethi faction attempted to weaponize a naturally occurring temporal rift to gain an advantage in regional conflicts. The operation required Tarian to infiltrate the faction’s base and neutralize their temporal destabilization device. The mission was complicated by a young civilian scientist coerced into aiding the Tzenkethi. Tarian’s El-Aurian empathy allowed him to connect with the scientist, convincing them to sabotage the device from within while Tarian orchestrated a daring escape. The mission not only prevented catastrophic timeline disruptions but also reaffirmed Tarian’s commitment to preserving lives wherever possible.

In the mid-2380s, Tarian found himself at the center of an ethical quandary when a temporal anomaly revealed an alternate timeline where the Genesis Project—a failed 23rd-century Federation experiment—was successful and led to widespread misuse. The DTI tasked Tarian with ensuring this timeline remained isolated, but during the mission, he encountered a version of himself from the alternate timeline. The encounter forced Tarian to confront the consequences of choices he had yet to make, deepening his understanding of the delicate interplay between fate and free will. Ultimately, he successfully contained the anomaly, though the personal impact of the experience lingered with him for years.

By 2398, Tarian’s extraordinary career had made him an unparalleled expert in temporal operations. When offered the position of Chief Temporal Operations Officer aboard the USS Herodotus, an undercover temporal starship, he accepted with a sense of renewed purpose. Onboard the Herodotus, Tarian found himself once again at the frontier of temporal exploration, applying centuries of knowledge to safeguard the timeline while mentoring a new generation of officers.
