Personality & Traits

General Overview Coen can have a stern exterior, but all it takes is for him to smile or start talking and it is easy to see that he’s a kind-hearted soul who is willing to lend a helpful hand to anyone in need. He knows what it’s like to feel a little out of place, and does what he can to make sure that others feel included and that their voices are heard.

He’s a disciplined individual, both at work and with his hobbies. As an enlisted crewman with special forces he always made a point to stay in top shape, and still maintains that practice. He also makes a point to go above and beyond with continuing education courses in his profession. When not at work he can often be found on long runs or fine tuning his skills on the guitar. He can be a bit of a flirt, but he's cautious about getting too close to anyone and hasn't been in a relationship since his wife's death.

Coen can be suspicious of power in politics, especially since his wife’s death. However, even before then, being on the wrong side of enemy lines more than once has caused him to think deeply about what the Federation fights for and what it doesn’t. He plays these cards close to his chest, but he’s a careful observer, and always trying to learn what he can.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Disciplined, can focus on solitary tasks for extended periods of time, loyal.

Weaknesses: Can be obsessive over problems or details, holds grudges.
Ambitions To find out what happened to his wife.
Hobbies & Interests Long-distance running, reading (history and/or crime), plays the guitar and a little piano, considers himself a connoisseur of bourbon and whiskey, will drink any coffee no matter how long it's been sitting there.

Personal History Coen was raised on Deneva Prime, the only child of Augustus and Genevieve Hughes. His father was a history teacher and his mother was a nurse and they lived a relatively modest lifestyle in the Federation colony there. Like many only children, as a child Coen was comfortable around adults, often finding adults and older children easier to talk to than his peers. He was often seen around the colony helping neighbors with their chores or learning the basics of the different trades in the colony from those who were willing to teach him. He was also somewhat of a lonely kid in that he wished it were easier to connect with kids his age. He had a couple of close friends that he found things in common with, but he found it hard to be a part of the crowd.

As he grew older Coen gravitated toward helping the community’s veterinarian and volunteering at the hospital. He found the work rewarding, though he felt bored and somewhat out of place on the planet. In secondary school he explored options like Starfleet, Doctors Without Borders, and the Interspecies Medical Exchange among other possibilities that would enable him to travel more.

Then, as Coen turned 18, Starfleet began to encounter what they labeled as skirmishes with the Dominion, and there were rumors that war was a distinct possibility. Rather than pursue a nursing degree, Coen enlisted in Starfleet so that he could begin service right away. Based on his interests and aptitude tests he was assigned a provisional position of Medic before basic training, and he did well enough at basic training to earn him a spot to train for a position with special forces as a Search and Rescue Medical Technician. As his squadron was nearing the end of their training it was official, the Federation was at war.

He met his future wife during the war. She was on a ship that had been taken down and he was part of the team that retrieved her and many others after their escape pods made it to a Class L moon. They didn’t start dating right away, but stayed in touch on occasion. A few years after the war was finally over they happened to cross paths again and hit it off. They dated and got married. Coen continued his service with Starfleet, and ended up getting his nursing degree by taking part-time courses while continuing with active service.

Coen’s and his wife had been married for fifteen years and were talking about starting a family of their own when she was killed on a mission in 2393. Coen was never given the details of what mission she was on, or how it happened, but she had hinted that she would be working with the Department of Temporal Investigations before she had left.

In the next years Coen began to quietly try to get closer to the truth behind what happened to his wife. The Herodotus assignment was an opportunity that he couldn’t pass up.
