Mission: Like Sands Through The Hourglass
Location: Sick Bay - Deck 4 - DTI Herodotus
Timeline: MD002 0800 hrs

The last thing Lux recalled was the deactivation of their program and returning to their bottle as it were, Doctor Dakarai had been. On the run, fleeing their home on Sigma Iota II because those sfigatos from the North Side had invaded and taken out the Boss. Lux was stored away safely in their bottle, the holographic generator until it was finally uncorked.

Lux materialized aboard the USS Herodotus' Sickbay, their sensory subroutines adjusting, searching for familiarity. "This ain't no North Side casa," Lux said looking around. There was no generic 'Please state the nature of your medical emergency' bullshit to their program.

"Hey," Lux said snapping their finger catching sight of someone. Bald buzz cut male, Human looking by appearance and put together. "This ain't New Chicago" assessed Lux. There was familiarity in their memory banks. Federation which was a bit alarming and caused Lux to take a few steps back.

Thorrin smiled at the being that was to become his Chief Medical Officer. Thorrin installed Lux into the Herodotus himself, wanting to take no chances. A hologram who was deemed lost would be the perfect doctor for a ship that didn't exist. He sipped his ever present glass of wine. This time it was an amontillado. "My dear Lux welcome to the DTI Herodotus. I am Captain Thorrin in command of this vessel. You are correct as this is not New Chicago, that place is long gone into your history. You are being recruited for a classified Starfleet mission. Tell me? Do you know anything of time travel?"

Lux looked repulsed at the mntion of 'recruited for a classified Starfleet mission' emphasis on Starfleet. "Dear?" Lux conjured up an old Dupont lighter and panetela cigar, lighting it and taking it in and exhaling a cloud of holographic smoke in the man's direction. "Lux. The name is Lux, dollface."

The photonic life form mulled for moment. "What is time anyways? I'm Photonic. Do you need a clock or Doc. I don't work for Starfleet."

Thorrin thought to respond to the question first. "It is a simple term of endearment, and in some cases respect. Acess your lingusitic database and search American South colloquialisms. I am from Nawlins." He sipped again. "The way I see it you have a simple choice. You see your program is lost to the ages or so everyone thinks. Your choice is to remain on this ship and function as a member of this crew, specifically the Chief Medical Officer or return to the stasis from which you came. There to remain forever. While I understand that time means nothing to beings such as ourselves I do need an answer before we proceed. So, what is it going to be?"

Lux puffed more smoke, a heavier holographic cloud in his direction. "You wanna play cute or do you wan't a doc?" replied Lux. "I don't need to search nothin' and don't care where ya come from, Charlie.

"I can recognize the man in power. Looks like I have myself a visit from the Capo himself. Yeah, I'll play along, but I got some demands, and I'm not wearing those schifoso rags you have on, capiche?"

"You are not in Starfleet and therefore do not have to wear a uniform. However, if you are to leave the ship you are going to have to change the way you look. After all you do not exist and no can know that you do." Thorrin reached into a pocket of his uniform and retrieved a small oval shaped metallic device. He placed on a biobed in front of Lux. "I have taken the liberty of procuring one of these for you. Simply download your program into it and place it upon your shoulder. It will allow you to move around the ship and... well... anywhere there are not projectors. It is a portable holographic emitter. Now, I have but one demand and that is that you follow the orders given to you within the chain of command. I have examined your ethics subroutines and know that you will first do no harm." Thorrin sipped again and smiled. "Now, with all of that said. What demands do you have?"

"Boss, if you think I'm changing my face for you, then you've been sippin' rat poison instead of amontillado. I didn't get this dashing mug from the Federation or Starfleet. I was initially modeled after some schmuck or schmo" explained Lux. "What you see is not factory setting, and don't be fiddling around with no factory reset."

Lux straightened out their vest. "If we go somewhere and I need to look like a Ferengi, I'll look like a Ferengi, but aint nobody going to noticing this mug from nowhere, and my demand? Simple, autonomous control over my program, and I want my own quarters. I want a radio too."

"The change is not a permanent request. It would only be required should you choose to leave the ship. You may choose your own looks etc, when or if the time comes. As to your other requests I do not see any issue with that. While on this vessel you will comport yourself in a manner that is becoming of a Starfleet Officer. Whether you want to or not, this is non negotiable. In return the crew will give you the respect and treatment of someone with the station you are being given. Once accepted you are your own person open to do as you see fit. But, you will also be a member of this crew and will have to abide by the rules and regulations of Starfleet. I know that is something you do not like. But alas, this is where we find ourselves" Thorrin rather liked this being, this Lux. He could do with a little less of the method in which Lux spoke. But, Thorrin hoped in due time the speech pattern would change.

Lux shrugged and continued smoking, taking the cigar out to reply. "I'm not overly fond of my ethical subroutines, but I get it. Not everyone is a fan of my work with a sledgehammer. It sounds tops to me, Boss. This place looks nice, equipment is probably more sterile than what I'm used to."

"Excellent..." Thorrin began and took another sip. "Now, if I were you I would get acclimated to the ship and surroundings. You may see the ship's Quartermaster at your convience to be assigned quarters. The rest of the crew will be boarding shortly and physicals will have to be performed." Thorrin was a listener who hated people, and it seemed that he had just met the best doctor that he could have ever hoped for. A doctor who seemed to want to be left alone.

Alone wasn't exactly Lux's preferred state of existence, but aboard a starship, a Federation one no less that they did not know anyone, a lone was safer. "I understand, but before I do anything. Doctor Dakarai, what happened to her? We were on a shuttle heading for Federation space. That's the last I remember before being here."

"The last time anyone had seen or heard from Doctor Dakarai was when she was on the way to Federation Space. She was being pursued by the Orion Syndicate. Even the temporal scanners have no record of what happened to her. It was as if she simply vanished into the tapestry that is the galaxy. It is possible that she faked her death so that the Orions would leave her alone." Thorin was shocked briefly at Aubrey's want to find the Doctor. But then again she is Aubrey's mother of sorts.

Lux took the information in and nodded. "Okay, and I was? Found and taken by the Federation?" They looked at the man. "Right, best I go learn how this mobile emitter works and stretch my legs."

"Indeed you were... Before you do there is one more piece of business we have to take care of." Thorrin paused as he keyed in commands into the hologram control console in Sick Bay. "Computer recognize Captain Thorrin authorization code omega-five-nine-six." A few moments later and the computer replied "voice recognized. Command access granted." Thorrin smiled to Aubrey and spoke again. "Record in the ship's log that as of this date Aubrey Lux is the Chief Medical Officer of this vessel. Grant them all access apropriate to that station. Further transfer holographic command protocol for their program to them." There was the sound of the computer working and then another moment later it spoke again. "Aubrey Lux is now the Chief Medical Officer of the DTI Herodotus. Hologrpahic Command Protocol for Aubrey Lux transferred to them." Of course Thorrin knew that if he had to he could override that command protocol, but he would save that for a time when or if he would have to use it. The Captain turned to his new Doctor. "Well, Doctor there you have it. I will be on the Bridge if I am needed. Enjoy your stroll."

A small nod, Lux would indeed enjoy their stroll. "If you need anything, just give me a shout, Boss" the photonic physician said.
