Mission:
In The Nick Of Time
Location: Sickbay - Deck 4 - USS Herodotus
Timeline: MD002 1000 hrs
Juli followed the medical officer into Sickbay and was surprised at how small it was. They were a small crew, but still, it definitely wasn't meant to keep many patients for long.
"I supposed if all get sick at once, we're fending for ourselves," Juli commented when she saw the Spartan facilities. "Just the basics for you too, huh?"
Addison took another look around at Medical. "Its sufficient I feel, for the size of the crew. I had a clinic I ran, which was on a converted Antares cargo ship. The ship was divided, one level was for treating those of the animal kingdom, whereas I had a level for a clinic to tend to the sentient races I came across and needed treatment. And this is top of the art for me. The ship I was on, the USS Apollon, oh it had its trials, in medical, the database was corrupted. I had to rely on my memory and books I had on hand to treat those on the crew."
"Animals - that sounds fun. I wouldn't mind a companion animal. Something tells me Captain Thorrin isn't the type to go for it." Juli walked up to the one biobed and hopped up to sit on it, letting her legs dangle off of the edge.
Addison shook her head. "I don't really think he will want that. And he seems to me like the sort of no animals allowed on the ship with what I feel we're possibly going to face. If we are traveling around where time is concerned, no room for an animal at all. Except for maybe a toy animal that won't be dealing with time travel."
Reaching into a drawer, Addison pulled out the medical tricorder, to begin the scan before she started, she asked. "Juli, do you have a pheromone inhibitor or are you one of the rare Orion's who don't have to worry about the pheromones?" Addison hadn't looked at the records even if they were available to her, She preferred to ask the person before she did.
"I have an implant here." Juli lifted her left arm and pointed under her left armpit. "This one has been there a little under three years. I've been told that mine are pretty mild, but honestly, I've been on one form of suppression or another since I moved to Earth when I was 16, so I wouldn't know."
Addison gave a nod as to that information. "You moved to Earth when you were 16? How did that come about?" activating the tricorder, adding Juli's name to the data file. She pulled out the handscanner from the top of the tricorder and started her scanning. She was curious as to Juli's past just to get to know more about her.
"Boarding school," Lissa said with an easy shrug. "My parents are uh... into some questionable business practices. Turns out there are some nice people on Earth willing to sponsor kids trying to get out from under that. So, mom dropped me off. I got a little video message from them at high school graduation. One of my brothers came to my Academy graduation, but I didn't hear from anyone else. It's easier that way."
Juli talked about her past with relative ease. There was a pain deep inside her, but she kept it buried so well, that she barely knew where to find it anymore. It had become easier for her to just let the distance grow, rather than try to keep some kind of strained contact, or hope for something that would never come to fruition.
An expression of compassion, not one of pity, showed in Addison's eyes. "A bit difficult when it comes to family at times. My husband had some strained relations with his family. Some of them didn't want him to get married to me, so they tried and I will stress the word try to drive us apart. They didn't want him to be with someone who had been in Starfleet. They felt that Starfleet was just to meddlesome."
"Really? Where was your husband from"? Juli asked, curious who she might have married that didn't like Starfleet.
"The same place that I was born, I am from a colony called Amazonite. It didn't bother my husband, but his mom and dad, ooh well they just didn't like me for awhile. Probably did a turn around when I went into Starfleet reserve to help rebuild the my home colony. They figured that I was okay since I stepped back from Starfleet, if only for a short time."
"Haven't heard of it," Juli said shaking her head. "Or if I have, it wasn't something that stood out. Is that the general feeling there, or just his family? In my sector, everyone thinks Starfleet meddles too much," she added dryly.
" I don't think it made any of the vast quadrant papers, so its relatively unknown. Most of the colony are amenable to Starfleet. They don't depend on a lot of tech Starfleet offers, Life was pretty simple, and I enjoyed it. Until I just wanted to go see the stars and make my own way and go down my own path." Addison finished running the scan on Juli. "Okay there you go."
"Is that all?" Juli asked, looking around somewhat surprised at how quickly it had gone. Juli hopped off the table and wandered the space. She felt lucky to have the space that she had in her science lab. "So, what do you think you'll be doing on this mission in your down time? Do you have research?"
"I'll have research going over the medical files of the crew, practice my medical knowledge. I got some reading material I had gotten from Kok Station, had to start from scratch. I've got books, of varying genres. Besides medical books, fiction, mysteries, books on science. Plus got bits and pieces to work on some of my interests. I have a list. And I'm always open to learning more skills. Got to keep myself and my mind engaged in different pursuits." Addison ticking off her partial list on her fingers. "What about you?"
Juli shrugged. "I'm a ghost now in the field. Though it helps that I really wasn't working on much of my own before. As a department head I did more providing support to the team. But, I am an astrophysicist, so this whole project opens up a whole new realm of possibilities that I love to get in on," she admitted.
Juli stopped examining Sickbay's facilities for a moment and turned to the doctor with a serious look on her face. "Have you ever... Do you know how hard it would be... Like, to make my skin look well, not Orion, and make it a shade in something more like how Humans or Bajorans look?"
Addison had a puzzled expression in her eyes, when Juli asked that question. "That is something I've not been asked before." Her voice having a contemplative tone. "If Captain Thorrin is needing to have anyone change their skin color, as a disguise, I think that can happen, using a skin dye. Much like humans, Bajorans have varying skin pigmentations, going from light to dark in color. You have given me a bit more to research on."
"I mean, he didn't say anything. But I do stand out here. And in a lot of places. And if our goal is to not leave an imprint. I'm sure the point is not not be seen at all..." Jules trailed off. "Anyway, it's just a thought.
"So why all the questions about changing the skin color, other than my saying could be done non permanently. You stand out here? I think everyone stands out here in their own way. We've got, three El-Aurians, one who is a Trill hybrid, We have Zosia, who is a Lanthanite. Our XO is a Vulcan/Human, and our pilot is Caitian. Then there is myself, our chief operations officer, and my nurse, he is Human. We've got a lovely variety of people, like a box of assorted chocolates. Or candies whichever you prefer."
Jules tried to shrug off her inquiry as casual. "I mean it's a thought. If we're creating new identities anyway, killing off our old ones, why not go all out with it? Anyway, I'm sure you're busy. Other house calls, lab visits to make to get us all up to date on our physicals. I don't mean to tie you up." Jules stepped away from the equipment she'd been half-heartedly examining and took a few steps toward the doctor.
"I am agreeable to that." Addison watching Juli visibly evade her questions, having a knowing twinkle in her eyes. This may come up again, perhaps in further conversations between herself and Juli. "Thank you for coming to medical, and for the tour of science."
The young Chief Science Officer had made her way to Sickbay's exit. "Yeah, drop in anytime," Jules said warmly with a casual shrug. "Til next time."
