2,090 words; about a 10 minute read
Mission:
Like Sands Through The Hourglass
Location: Office of the Chief Security Officer - Deck 3 - USS Herodotus
Timeline: MD003 1042 hrs
Addison wished to see the set up that the Herodotus had for security. Where it was located, Security was just a deck above. She did need to do an examination on him to add to her records of the crew. First off though she was going to visit Security. Would Major Eilfaren be there?
Hastios was dotting a few I's and crossing a few T's, to use a Human phrase. He'd always found their language colourful at the best of times and they tended to wax lyrical about a lot. His desk strewn with PADDs ranging from the few enlisted officers he had, the supplies onboarding and some quick refit ideas he had that he wanted completed before they left Kok Station. Sighing he rubbed his eyes, he felt there was less paperwork in the marines.
The door to security opened with its humming grinding sound. A woman's voice called out, "Major Eilfaren, may I enter? I am Doctor Addison Talbert." her voice having a light Texan drawl. Addison stepped slightly inside to allow the door to close behind her. She flipped her loose ponytail back over her shoulder, pushing back an errant strand of hair.
Looking up from his desk as his office doors swung open his eyes met a blonde woman, Human by the feelings she gave off, and with eyes as blue as any ocean. "Of courser doctor." Hastios said rising from his chair to greet her. He was always respectful and often got up to meet anyone. Staying seated was rude, and whereas he could be that at times he tried not to be. Bowing towards her, "What can I do for you doc?" he asked. "Surely no-one has stolen medical supplies already?" he asked deadpan as his head rose.
A soft chuckle, Addison approaching closer "No, nothing's been stolen." though she wanted for some reason to tease and say maybe my heart. It must be due to his eyes, the green shade which made her think of springtime or a summer's day, when all was green and filled with life. She refrained from doing so, it would make it seem that she wasn't professional. Still though, the corners of her mouth turning upwards. What is it with the El Aurian men on this ship being so handsome? Pulling her mind back to her original focus Addison answered.
"I am exploring the ship, getting to know the crew. Plus, I do need to get a scan of your physiology for a comparison after missions."
Hastios watched as Addison's eyes seemed to drift over him. He pause before answering noticeable and welcoming. Sometimes a little ego boost helped from time to time. "Thankfully doctor the ship isn't that large. I'd expect you'd be done in a day or two of starting your endeavour." he mused. "My last medical, my last scan, should be on file. It was only a couple of months ago and I can promise nothing has changed since then." he arched an eyebrow.
"It may have been only a couple of months ago, I still need to make a scan. With my being new upon this ship, no-one will be exempt, this includes me. It won't take long, I've got my medical tricorder with me." there was a determined glint in her eyes. "There could have been some small smidgen of a change that needs to be looked at. Better safe than sorry." the determined expression disappearing being replaced with a twinkle in her eyes. "I am not above making house calls, in an example my being right here. I have no problem hunting someone down to just do the simple scan. As I explained to Zosia I am willing to crawl in the jefferies tubes to gain a scan." Addison chuckling.
"I'm not designed for jeffries tubes." Hastios implied his size being the reason. He could get through them but not without manoeuvring a lot and often bumping into things on the way. However, in this situation he had no real reason to put up any sort of fight against the doctor, a scan didn't hurt anyone and if she wanted to waste her time that was up to her. At least he didn't have to go see her, that was a bonus. "You may scan me doctor. Sadly I doubt you will find anything that'll interest you. Have you always been this way? Hunting people down?" he asked.
"I have been the sort to make housecalls as it were." Addison pulling out the hand scanner, "And this is for the records to make note of your chronal readings as well as the biometrics before any upcoming missions, and also I will be taking readings after the missions. Have a seat please." giving a bit of a smile. "Granted yes, you would have some difficulty in the tubes and I do not feel that you would run away from a scan either. Your statement, I will say, is a misconception of my not finding anything of interest." a twinkle in her eyes, as Addison began the scan once he sat down.
He was tall and it made it easier for her to do the scan when he sat. Not that she was short mind you, still, better to take a reading when he was at rest. "My interest lies in keeping tabs on the health of the crew, and making certain I can come up with something to combat the issues of time illnesses. And as I mentioned earlier get to know the crew."
Much like Thorrin, Hastios had his own aura about him, making her heart skip a beat as well. Mentally Addison shook her head, guess this was proving to the blonde doctor that she was still alive and can definitely appreciate how people look. Not to mention, good heavens such powerful body language, certain of himself, can also take command of things too.
"How long have you been with the Herodotus?" Addison glancing momentarily at Hastios. A piece of knowledge that was important, another basis to keep track of chronitons.
Moving from behind his desk Hastios took up a seated position resting on the front of his desk. His office wasn't large, but enough to fit in a desk, couple of chairs and a space for security data to be shown on consoles along some of the walls. "Yes, the captain mentioned having the medical staff keep an eye on us for temporal psychosis." he agreed with the idea of it but the actual psychosis part of temporal travel was rare.
"I am glad your interests lie in keeping tabs on the health of the crew." he chuckled. "You'd be a poor doctor if you didn't." he smirked. "As for your ambition to seek something to alleviate our time related illnesses I can only wish you good luck. Our people didn't have much luck, only a few treatments for things such as temporal tinnitus." he shrugged, his shoulder muscles rippling as he did so.
The doctor's emotions were like most Humans, erratic and he could see the effort to try and control them. Most Human's forgot that El Aurian's were also empaths and emotions not always displayed were always seen and felt by members of his species. With a side glance at the doctor as she moved the scanner over his head she asked about his service to the ship. "I would imagine doctor as short lived as yours. I have only just been reassigned to the Herodotus after a lengthy spell as an instructor at Marine HQ on Earth. That is the most you will find in my service jacket anyway, the rest is classified. What made you decide to join? This isn't an easy assignment, cutting ties with your old life..."
A hesitation in her scan, just a brief flicker of a strong emotion then the scanner moved on. "Oh it was a choice of being alive or dead." Addison remarked, her tone light, as if she had just taken a walk in a park and had a lovely day. "a wild ride in a runabout that was struck by purple lightning, the runabout immediately losing power, no way to beam off, a cold stone mountainside, and my runabout hurtling towards it. I was whisked away before the craft impacted."
"I suppose in circumstances like that then life here is the only option. Unless you have a death wish of course... then purple lightning is the way to go." he thought it would be an amazing way to die if it was to happen. Not that family members would be happy about it.
Addison chuckled, it was a bit of gallows humor but Hastios had a point. "You know you are right, it is quite the way to go, and it was pretty." she resumed the scan to take in the whole of Hastios "You know, before that happened, I had helped bring two new lives into the universe. A baby girl, and a calf. The calf was in breech position got it turned around to the proper position. Good thing I learned a thing or two from my father and from my husband; when my husband was alive."
"I am sorry for your loss doctor." Hastios made quick mention of that, loss was never easy and it stayed with you no matter what. El Aurian's, most of them, viewed loss of life as the next stage of life. A life beyond the existence they currently reside in. "We believe that a person touched by another is never without them. They have shaped part of your life, no matter the size, or whether it be good or bad. Prime example being the experience of both your father and husband let you save the bovine creature when otherwise it would probably have died killing the mother as well. Proof he's not really gone but still guiding your hands."
"I wholly agree with you, Hastios." Addison forgetting to use rank or his last name. She was concentrating on the scan, she did pause to look into his eyes. "I felt Thomas' hands guiding mine, I wasn't alone, and he was 'with' me when I closed my eyes to not see my end." a slight smile then she continued "And just seeing the calf healthy and the family in their time of closeness before that, it was a taste of Heaven seeing them. All I can do now is look at it as part of my journey, weaving the losses as well as well as the possible things I will hopefully gain, with being here." a beep, let Addison know that the scan was done. "There you go, quite fit indeed and the temporal levels look to be fine as well."
"I should hope so doctor. Until now I've tried to steer clear of as many temporal events as I can." Hastios chuckled. "Let's also hope that any losses are kept to a minimum. Unless they are shooting at us, then in which case there will be many on their side." he added as he watched Addison close up her tricorder. "Anyway doc, if anyone steals a hypospray you know where I am." he rose to his feet and regarded her beneath him.
"I will certainly do so. And I think I am almost done with the scans, for the rest of the crew." drawing in a breath. "A lot of work but I don't mind. I best be going now, and thank you for not tossing me out the door." Addison giving a laugh and holding out her hand to shake his.
"Ah yes." Hastios reached out and as his hand engulfed Addison's there was a small shake with a light grip. He knew how hard sometimes he squeezed so for some he tried to be considerate of that. "Take care, doctor."
Addison's hand was firm when she shook his hand, she noticed that his grip was light and yet it showed the strength he had as well. He was being considerate and she liked that. Addison released his hand and with a wave she stepped out of security. A lovely man, who had his own level of mystery.
