Mission:
In The Nick Of Time
Location: Holodeck 1 - Deck 5 - USS Herodotus
Timeline: MD 0004 2200 hrs
Tarian was thinking about what he could do while waiting for the away team to get back from the planet. Since he was getting off of duty for a little bit, Tarian thought about going to check out the holodeck and seeing what musical programs that he could get into.
Heading down to the holodeck and stepping off of the turbolift, Tarian realized that the holodeck was already in use. The doctor was on the holodeck and using one of the musical programs that the ship had. Tarian thought that it was ironic that the doctor was already using a holodeck program that he was thinking about using.
Checking with the computer, Tarian realized that the holodeck wasn't locked and said the iconic words, "Enter when ready." Walking over to the doors, they parted ways for Tarian as he walked inside.
At first when the door opened there was what looked like a stage set up with various chairs waiting for other orchestral musicians to sit down. In the center was Addison, looking around then placed a flute to her lips, it's silvery coat gleaming beneath the lights. As she began the first notes of Morning Mood from Peer Gynt Suite the scenery began to change.
Where the stage once was, it changed to that of a forest scene with the suns light filtering through the treetops and touching upon her.
Addison was wearing a light blue peasant blouse with a dark blue full skirt which hit her shin. She was barefoot, the green moss beneath her feet was cool and velvety soft. She seemed to be lost in the music she was playing. The notes she played were sweet and pure.
The doors had shut behind Tarian and disappeared into the program. He was watching as the scenery changed around him, along with the music. Tarian wasn't entirely sure what the music was, but knew that it was from Earth. It was a beautiful piece and the Doctor was definitely playing it and playing it quite well, which Tarian appreciated.
Tarian appreciated all sorts of music and musical instruments, having played several himself. He enjoyed various string instruments from places like Vulcan, Bajor, and elsewhere in the universe, having picked up the Vulcan Lute over the years. Tarian waited for a little bit, watching as the scenes changed around him and the holographic characters with the music. He waited until the interlude to start clapping along with the characters, not knowing if the Doctor had even noticed his presence quite yet. But, he didn't want to ruin her concentration either, as he knew how hard it could be to play music.
The piece came to an end, Addison lowered the flute, opening her eyes, taking a few breaths. There was the sense that she wasn't alone, which caused her to look around.
"Hello, is someone there?" Not seeing who was inside the holo-suite with her, due to the trees.
Tarian couldn't help but chuckle as he called for the trees and other people around to disappear, giving the Doctor a better view. Once the computer took the trees and people away, Tarian stepped forward and said, "Sorry, didn't mean to spook you, Doc. But, I saw that someone was on the holodeck and I thought I'd see who it might've been. Nice work on the piece, by the way."
With the forest and other orchestra members disappearing, Addison gave a welcoming smile.
"Hello Tarian, thank you. And fancy meeting you here" moving to a place to have a seat upon a grassy rise not to far from her. "Please call me Addison. After all we're not on duty. What brings you to this pastoral setting?"
After all, it was now a meadow without the trees there. Addison sat down gracefully, smoothing her skirt and placing her flute in her lap.
"Come have a seat, there is room."
Tarian came over and took a seat at one of the empty chairs near Addison. Picking up one of the Vulcan Lutes, he couldn't help but chuckle as he started to play it with the skill not too far from a master. As he played it, he replied, "Well, I was going to come and do a couple rounds of boxing. So that I could get some energy out. But, this might be even better for the soul as they say. What were you doing down here?"
With a whispered command the grassy rise disappeared, to where she was now seated upon a chair much like his. Addison gave a chuckle.
"I came to play some music and settle the mind." Addison went silent for the moment to listen to the music Tarian was playing finding it being soothing and rather beautiful. She hadn't heard this piece of music before, closing her eyes to let it fill the air.
Tarian just played away, kind of getting caught up in the moment. He wasn't playing anything in particular. Just playing whatever came to mind. After a few minutes of playing, Tarian completed the song and put the lute back down.
Hearing the music end, Addison opened her eyes. "That was beautiful. What brought you to play music? Is something troubling you? Or just the need to play music?"
"I just enjoy playing music. I've trained on several of them, the Vulcan Lute included. I'm just sorry that I intruded on your performance. But, it was quite nice," Tarian replied after thinking about it for a moment. Looking back at the doctor, Tarian asked, "How about you? What made you want to come and play this fine evening?"
"You didn't intrude, and I am happy you liked the performance." Addison had laid her flute across her lap as she was conversing with Tarian.
" I needed to get the feeling of being in open space, instead of closeted up either in my quarters or be in medical." Addison giving a warm laugh.
"I am quite glad that the holosuite had been invented, sure helps to stop cabin fever. And also a good way to think upon matters at hand."
"Yeah, I thank whoever fixed up the holosuites and holodecks, so that they could be on starships too. They have definitely helped me out whenever I felt the cabin fever creeping up on me," Tarian said, thinking about the few times that he has used the holodecks since coming onboard. Looking back at the Doctor, Tarian asked, "Is this an actual place or just something that you had the holodeck dream up?"
Addison tucked a strand of hair behind her left ear as she pondered his question.
"Well part of this is from where I was born, on Amazonite. And that place was, where I used to play when my husband was alive. It was beautiful there, serene, nothing polluted. The mornings were divine. I enjoyed greeting the first light of day with that music." giving a chuckle.
She gave out a sigh at the memories she had.
"Those memories I will keep in my heart and mind." Addison looking back at Tarian.
"Kind of reminds me of a place that I knew back on Trill. Since my father was a Trill Ambassador and Diplomat at the time that Vulcans made first contact with the Trill people, my mom was brought in to help facilitate the whole first contact. My mom eventually married my dad and the rest is History. But, the one thing that they did was show us this amazing place outside the capital City of Trill that was very similar. It was beautiful and totally worth the visit, if you ever make it to Trill," Tarian replied, thinking back to his childhood. He thought fondly of the place where his parents had their first date back in the 21st century.
Addison watched the play of emotions in Tarian's eyes, she gave a smile, "That sounds beautiful, I do hope to visit there, especially since I've not been there before." her eyes drifted towards his lute.
"Has there been a favorite place that you liked to play your lute?" Addison placing her arm across the back of her chair, and leaning her chin in her hand.
"I would honestly love to play the lute on Vulcan someday. I think I'd like to see if I could ever measure up to playing this lute in front of the people who made it, if that makes any sense? Like, I know that it's hard to impress a Vulcan, so I'd like to see if I ever could," Tarian replied with a small smile on his face as he thought about playing it for a crowd full of Vulcans.
As he thought about it, he asked, "How about you? Have you ever wanted to play your flute professionally or anything? Or have you ever played it professionally?"
"That is something that I've not truly considered. I did play in front of the town when we did a celebration, I was also part of an orchestra during my academy days. First and foremost, my mind was on learning all that I could where the healing process was concerned." a smile drifted across her lips as she thought of those times.
"How about you? Have you wanted or ever played professionally?" her eyes coming back into focus.
"With as much moving around and challenges of my job, I've never had the chance to play more than just something like this. In a holodeck or maybe even just as apart of a ship's company. But, I've thought about it and if I ever got out of the temporal business, I'd love to go and play somewhere," Tarian replied honestly. He hadn't had much of a chance to play professionally, since he was always on the move with the DTI. Thankfully though, this job on this ship allowed him to explore his musical side though.
"I would love to be present when you do play, if that is possible. Though, I am quite willing to listen to you play, as it is beautiful, while we are here on this ship." Addison standing up to stretch her legs. She had forgotten to pick up her flute it rolling off her lap.
Tarian reached over and picked the flute up that had fallen onto the ground. Thankfully, it wasn't damaged when it fell onto the ground. Standing back up, Tarian handed the flute back to the Doctor and said, "Don't want to forget something like this. The good thing is that it didn't take a great tumble when it had the fall."
"Oh my!" Addison exclaimed, a smile of gratitude appearing. "Thank you. I don't want to lose this." she tucked the flute into a pocket of her skirt.
