In The Nick Of Time
Location: Holodeck 1 - Deck 5 - USS Herodotus
Timeline: MD 0004 2300 hrs
"I would love to be present when you do play, if that is possible. Though, I am quite willing to listen to you play, as it is beautiful, while we are here on this ship." Addison standing up to stretch her legs. She had forgotten to pick up her flute it rolling off her lap.
Tarian reached over and picked the flute up that had fallen onto the ground. Thankfully, it wasn't damaged when it fell onto the ground. Standing back up, Tarian handed the flute back to the Doctor and said, "Don't want to forget something like this. The good thing is that it didn't take a great tumble when it had the fall."
"Oh my!" Addison exclaimed, a smile of gratitude appearing. "Thank you. I don't want to lose this." she tucked the flute into a pocket of her skirt.
There was a silence from Addison as she wondered about something then she spoke, a little bit hesitantly "I was wondering about something, have you or do you like to dance?"
Tarian had to think about it for a moment and chuckled as he thought about it. "Depends on the partner. Usually, I have two left feet, but it was also depending on who I was with. Do you dance, by chance?"
A sunny smile, "Yes I do." Giving a graceful low curtsey. "One of the things I love." Addison straightened up. "What would you consider a good dance partner?"
Tarian offered up a curt nod himself as he thought about it for a moment. He got into position and said, "You know, it depends on the type of music and dancing because each type requires a different type of skill. How about you? What do you look for in a dance partner? And what kind of dancing do you prefer?"
"Even though I know the classical steps there is one that I am fond of, besides doing freeform dancing to rock and roll music. The easiest and to me the most versatile is the two step. Its the one that a person can add a little bit of flair to. and can be danced to different music." then with a slight smile, Addison added, "Also forgive me if I step on your toes sometimes I can get two right feet."
A pause then Addison commented, raising a querying eyebrow. "I almost forgot there is a dance step that is even more fun, and that is the polka."
Tarian raised an eyebrow and asked, "Polka? What's polka. It sounds like it would be quite the dance. Is it hard to learn?"
"It is easy to learn. Hmmn I can show you the basics then, we can dance around the floor. But first." she looked up to the ceiling. "Computer change the scenery to that of a ballroom." what used to be a meadow, and partial orchestral stage, now had a ball room dance floor circa 1940 time period .
The ceiling had wooden beams, sparkling chandelier hung above, the crystalline beads catching the light emitting rainbows on the white surface. The polished dark wooden floor also caught the lights.
"There we go, I didn't want to cause you to injure yourself due to uneven surface." Alison commented "Now music. " she cued up the music for the song that Anna and the King and I had danced but there would be no words. Just the music.
"Okay now the easy steps, the counting. One, two three and-" at the 'and' Addison gave a little bit of a hop.
Tarian stood back for a moment as he watched the scenery changed and listened to Addison talk a little bit about the dance. Once she said that it was easy and she started to show off the first step or two, Tarian decided to mimic the move that she just made.
Looking over at her, Tarian chuckled and asked, "Now, how was that? Hopefully, I did that right."
Addison was smiling watching Tarian's steps, "that is good, you have a natural rhythm. Now lets try it this way." taking both of his hands to start them dancing around the room. She started out slowly though for their movement to match.
Tarian slowly matched her pacing and rhythm, not wanting two left feet to appear, as the humans would say. It was slowly becoming a bit more natural as they danced together, even if he had to look down and around to make sure that he kept up with the doctor.
"Hopefully, I'm doing this right and I don't have two left feet. I've heard that from a few Humans before while I've been stationed on Earth before," Tarian replied with a small chuckle.
Addison tsked at that. "You didn't have the right teachers then. You have an ear for music, and you match the rhythm as you play the music. That can translate to your feet."
She held out her hands once more. "we'll take another spin around the floor then-" raising an eyebrow as she smiled broadly, "We up the ante, your arms around me and we'll dance the polka that way."
Tarian couldn't help but chuckle a little bit because his dancing teachers in the past truly weren't the best and would constantly say that he had two left feet. Tarian took the doctor's hand and said, "Ready whenever you are doc! Thank you for giving the two left foot Trill a good little bit dance lesson."
"You are very welcome, and thank you for indulging me in this." giving out a warm chuckle.
Around the room they did dance, then a pause when they got back to the starting spot.
"Okay, now for the last part. " Addison catching her breath, a polka can be rather vigorous, but something very fun.
"Are you prepared for it? I think you already know the basic position "She stepped forward moving her arms forward, one hand at his waist, the other hand waiting for him to take it. "I'll let you count, one two three and--"
The pair started to dance the last part of it. Even though he was counting, Tarian was letting the doctor kind of lead the way. "Hey, this isn't too bad. Apparently, I don't have two left feet like I thought that I did and some of my previous teachers said that I had."
Tarian and the doctor continued across the dance floor and it was like the music was taking over. At least for Tarian. He was letting it guide him.
The tune of the song changed to what was known as the Beer Barrel Polka. From there it changed to the crooning's of the Andrew Sisters, Roll out the Barrel.
A blast from the way back past.
Addison broke out in a light hearted laugh. "It looks like the holodeck music listing has a mind of its own. I don't mind. Andrews Sisters, Circa 1937-1950's"
After a few more dancing around the floor, her skirt whirling about as they danced, then Addison called out "computer end music." the music dying away, her breathing quick , her face flush from the dancing.
"You dance really well, and it looked like you were having a bit of fun. It is enjoyable when the music takes control, yes?" having not stepped away from Tarian.
"Sounds like something that I would have enjoyed back when I was a kid on Trill. Some of the music from the 21st century on Trill was just like this. It was a bit like going back to my childhood. So, thank you for taking me back doctor," Tarian said with a genuine smile. He hadn't had that much fun in a while. He walked over and grabbed a water bottle that was sitting on the side and offered one up to the doctor.
"Need something to drink, doc?" Tarian offered up, handing one of the water bottles over to her.
"Yes please." Addison accepting the drink. "I am glad that I was able bring up fond memories. Guess that was a good prescription for the two of us." soft chuckle before she took a slow sip. "Thank you for being a willing partner in the dance. It took me back to my childhood where we had dancing at the colony." she pulled out two grey kerchiefs from her skirt pocket, handing one to Tarian, the other she used to wipe away the perspiration at her temple.
Tarian took the kerchief and wiped the perspiration from his own temple as he said, "Yeah, like I said before I think. It kind of reminded me a bit of my childhood too. Even though that was quite some time ago. That was right when Trill was starting to figure themselves out and make their way out into the universe. Such an interesting time, if you ever wanted to look into Trill History."
"I would like that very much." Addison responded her eyes expressing her honest desire to do just that. "I have been one who is interested in history, of all races.
A final sip of her water, her eyes looking around the dance room where they had danced the polka. "If you'd like we could do this again, and once again you do not have two left feet at all, you still have a right foot and left foot." Addison grinning. "I'd like to say that, apparently your former teachers were lacking in their anatomy lessons. " giving a wink to Tarian.
Tarian bowed gracefully for a moment before coming back up to say, "I would love to do something like this again. That way, I won't interrupt your personal holodeck time again, like I did this time. I do apologize for taking up any of your time, but I did enjoy it nonetheless! Just let me know if and when you'd like to do something like that."
"I didn't mind you walking in when you did. It turned out to be rather lovely. Also the same offer can be extended to you. Let me know when you would like to do something like this again. Or even something else. Explore our interests most definitely. " Addison smiling once more.
"A doctor of many talents! I'm glad that we had the chance to play and dance together today. It was good to just get away from crunching numbers all day. But, I do believe that I have to get me a bite to eat before heading back and crunching some more numbers. I'll have to catch you later and we'll see what else we can't do," Tarian replied as he smiled back before heading out of the holodeck to get some more work done.
